Editorial Standards
Last updated:
Our readers need to trust what they read on AV1. These standards guide every story we publish.
Accuracy
We verify facts before we publish. We name our sources whenever we can and link to original documents, data and reporting. When we cannot confirm something, we do not report it as fact.
Fairness
We seek comment from people and organizations who are the subject of critical reporting, and we give them a reasonable amount of time to respond. When someone declines to comment, we say so.
Independence
Our news decisions are made by our editors. Advertisers, sponsors and outside interests do not influence what we cover or how we cover it.
Sources
We prefer on-the-record sources. We grant anonymity only when the information is important, cannot be obtained another way and the source faces real risk. At least one editor must know the identity of any anonymous source.
News and opinion
News reporting and opinion are clearly separated. Opinion pieces are labeled as opinion.
Use of AI tools
Our journalists may use software tools for research, transcription or translation. A person reviews and is responsible for everything we publish.
Corrections
When we make a mistake, we fix it and say so. See our corrections policy.
